Science Express

Enriching Children's Minds Through Science

Elementary

Science Express offers In-School Field Trips for students in grades K-6. A trained instructor will visit your school, on your schedule, to engage students in 75 minutes of hands-on science FUN. All programs include a make-and-take home activity, as well as a Certificate of Achievement.

Meeting Science Standards
Not only are our science programs FUN for students, they also correlate with the new Washington State Science Standards (published June 2009). Our programs address Systems, Inquiry, Application, and the new Domains of Science requirements. Please view our Program Guide for a list of our Physical Science, Life Science, and Earth and Space Science classes.

Funding Sources
Please see our Fees and Policies section below for more information on the cost of the program. The following resources are suggestions for funding the field trips:

  1. Parent-paid field trip fees
  2. Public Education Foundation (PEF) grants
  3. PTA or PTO funds
  4. State and Federal Grants (see links below)

Program Guide

Life Science Classes

Animal Extreme
Students will learn about extreme ecosystems and animal adaptations. Students will invent a new "extreme animal", experience the insulating properties of blubber, and play a camoflauge game
as they learn about life in deserts and tundras.

Have a Heart
Students will learn all about the human heart and
circulatory system as they listen to their heartbeat with a stethoscope, calculate their cardiac output using a nomogram, build a model circulatory system using pumps, tubing, and bulb syringes.

It's Alive
Students will learn about cell biology as they explore the characteristics of plants and animals by observing specimens and models. Students will extract chlorophyll from spinach and make a model cell to take home.

Physical Science Classes

Junior CSI
Students become crime scene investigators as they learn about the science of forensics. Students will make fingerprint cards, test unknown substances, analyze
ink samples, and use an ultraviolet light to find clues in the dark.

Machines in Motion

Young engineers will learn about simple and compound machines as they work in teams to build a model crane. Students will also learn about motion and energy as they race cars down a track.

Marvelous Matter - Level 1

Students will learn about the three phases of matter in
this introductory class. Students will explore surface tension, density, and mass as they migrate through several hands-on stations and take home a density bottle..

Marvelous Matter - Level 2

Students continue their exploration of matter as they learn about the 4th and 5th states, as well as physical and chemical changes. Students will also conduct a controlled experiment with ice cubes.

Simple Circuits

Students will learn about the fundamentals of
electricity as they build open and closed circuits using use batteries, lamps, and switches to complete their projects.

Surfing Soundwaves

Students will learn about sound as a form of energy as well as its physical properties as they conduct experiments in vibrations, amplification, and pitch. Students will make an instrument to take home.

Earth and Space Science Classes

Celestial Bodies
Students will learn about the solar system as they explore the sun, 8 planets, and the moon through games, simulations, and hands-on activities. Students will also make a scaled planetary model to
take home.

Geology Rocks!

Students will learn about rocks in minerals in this Geology class. Students will dig for gemstones, conduct geological tests, and take home what they find! Students will also help launch volcanoes!

Paleo Jr.
Students will learn about paleontology in this fun class about fossils. Students will observe and identify specimens from the millions of years ago and make a replica fossil to take home. Students will also make a sedimentary rock model out of colored sand.

Plate Tectonics

Students will be introduced to plate tectonics as they learn about mountains, earthquakes, and volcanoes. Students will experiment with liquefaction, make a seismograph machine, and launch volcanoes.

Wacky Weather

Students learn about meteorology as they experiment with weather instruments, air pressure, wind, and precipitation (aka Insta Snow). Then, students will learn about extreme weather conditions as they make tornadoes in a bottle and touch a ball of lightning.

Scientific Method
Students will learn the 5 steps to the Scientific Method as they conduct a controlled experiment. Students will complete a lab report with data to support their conclusions. This is a great class for
students considering Science Fair projects.
